St. Kitts and Nevis are located in the Eastern Caribbean, 19 degrees north of the Equator, and are separated by a channel that is two miles wide. St. Kitts’ area is 68 square miles; the island is 23 miles long and five miles wide at its widest point. Nevis, the smaller of the two islands, has an area of 36 square miles and a diameter of roughly 7 miles. St. Kitts and Nevis have a feel that is more South Pacific than Caribbean, and with their lush landscapes, they are a virtual paradise.
Practically unknown, these islands are rich with natural beauty and history. A luxurious atmosphere, very warm weather year-round, and constant cool trade winds make St. Kitts and Nevis immensely enjoyable. St. Kitts is home to Mount Liamuiga, a stunning dormant volcano with its peak hidden in the clouds. Covered with a thick tropical forest, this volcano is truly an amazing vision, located right in the center of the island. Nevis possesses its own cloud-fringed mountain filled with tropical flowers and interesting wildlife.
Bassaterre and Charlestown, the islands’ capitals, are delightful colonial harbor towns. Since natural preservation is extremely important on both islands, the law in both capitals states that no building may be taller than the surrounding palm trees. This allows for gorgeous views from all over the islands.
St. Kitts and Nevis are both overflowing with history; many points of interest include restored fortresses, haunted plantations, and petroglyphs. Experience a little taste of the islands’ history by staying in a comfortable plantation inn. Carib Indians and French and British settlers long ago fought for this land, and there are several fortresses that have been restored and other interesting landmarks. Alexander Hamilton was born on Nevis, and the replica of his original house is an intriguing museum.
