The best way to become your own mechanic is to work with someone who is already a mechanic. In addition, learn about your specific make and model--read your manual and identify its key parts. Then, buy a book such as Auto Repair for Dummies as an introduction. Auto repair is a learned art, so the more time you spend on it, the more skilled you will become.
We'll get you started with tips on perhaps the two most basic car jobs: changing the oil and jump-starting your car.
• Changing the Oil: The general rule is that you should change your oil every 3,000 miles; much longer and your gas mileage goes way down and your engine is at risk. To change your oil, first raise the car using either jack stands or a ramp; block the wheels and put the car in park. Then, slide under the car, locate the oil pan, and place a drain pan under the drain plug. Unscrew the drain plug, let the oil rush out into the drain pan (later, you can take it to a repair shop for recycling, and then screw the drain plug back in. Next, unscrew the oil filter (perhaps from above the car) and hand-tighten a new filter. Finally, locate the oil fill cap under the hood and pour in your new oil.
• Jump-Start: If your car won't start (perhaps you left the lights on overnight), you probably need a jump from another car. Assuming the battery isn't frozen and the battery casing isn't cracked, park another car close (though not touching), turn off both cars, and bring out the jumper cables. Attach the cables in this order:
o The positive terminal of the dead battery to the positive terminal of the live battery
o The negative terminal of the liver battery to the engine block of the dead car.
Then, start the good car and let it run for a minute before starting the dead car. Assuming it works, leave the cars running and then remove the cables in the reverse order that you attached them. If you car still doesn't start, you'll need to have it towed to a mechanic.
Neither of these jobs are too difficult, but they can save you money, and perhaps more importantly, they can offer proof that you are a car guy or car gal.
