Rio de Janeiro is the name of both a state and a city in southeastern Brazil. More commonly known as Rio, the city is famous for samba, hotel-lined tourist beaches Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon, for their giant statue of Christ the Redeemer at the peak of the Corcovado mountain, and for its yearly celebration, Carnaval. Tijuca Forest in Rio is the biggest forest inside an urban region.
Rio de Janeiro is one of the most densely populated places on earth. The Cariocas, as the residents of Rio are known, thrive on dance, drink, beach, sport and sun.
The population of the Rio is about 6,100,000 and is Brazil’s second largest city. Rio was the capital of Brazil until 1960, when Brasilia took its place.
