The government of Brazil is a presidential democracy. The President has executive power. He is the head of state, the head of government, and the appointer of the cabinet. Elections for the President and the Vice-President are held every four years and are determined by popular vote.

Brazil operates under a bicameral legislative system. There is a Senate, with 81 seats, and a Chamber of Deputies, with 513 seats. In Senate elections, three members from each state are elected by the majority and each Senator serves an eight-year term. Chamber of Deputies members serve four-year terms and are elected by proportional representation.
