Here are some suggested items for a newborn baby's wardrobe:

• 3 or 4 receiving blankets (usually small and lightweight.)
• 4-5 sleepers (pajamas with feet)
• 2-3 sleeping gowns or "sacks"
• 4-6 onesies (one piece outfits, often made out of soft tee-shirt material)
• 3-4 outfits (dresses or pants/shirt) for ventures out of the home
• A special dress or outfit for christening, baptism or other special occasion
• 4-5 pairs of socks
• 2-3 sweaters if the climate is cool
• A baby bunting for very cool weather
• 1-2 hats, either for warmth or sun protection
• 3-4 washable bibs
• 2-3 crib sheets
• 2-3 waterproof pads

A casual observer may be skeptical: does a tiny baby really need so many things? A new parent can certainly make do with less, but the issue with newborns is that they are constantly soiling their clothes with dirty diapers that leak (even with the best brands) or with "spit-up." Some babies require a number of outfit changes in one day just to stay clean and dry. The list above is an approximation. You may find that you need even more clothes in order to get by! Some may wonder, "How will I know if my baby is too cool or too warm?" A general guideline is to dress your baby one more "layer" than what you feel comfortable wearing.
