Most newborns arrive weighing about seven and a half pounds and measuring about 20 inches long. These new arrivals can sleep up to 20 hours a day during their first few weeks. Considering these facts, it is amazing how many clothes they actually need and how much care and concern these clothes demand of the new parents! On a practical level, clothes are essential in protecting the newborn from the elements, whether it is the bright sun or cold weather. On an entirely different level, adorable clothes make the parent smile and marvel at this wonderful, little new person. Special outfits may be family heirlooms, such as christening gowns, or later serve as reminders of the day your little one gave you his or her first real smile, or cut a first tooth. The formal name for a newborn's baby wardrobe is a layette. This includes not only clothing, but bedding as well.
