A baby shower should be given anywhere from four to eight weeks before the baby's anticipated arrival. It is helpful to the mother-to-be to have the shower "sooner than later" so she'll have plenty of time and energy to make any exchanges if necessary, to wash and prepare all the clothes and linens for the little one, and of course, to write thank you notes before she is up all night feeding her bundle of joy. Not a few mothers-to-be have had the baby unexpectedly before the date of the shower. Some mothers, especially if the gender of the child will be a surprise, desire to have the shower a few weeks after the baby is born. Those desiring to host the shower need to find out the mother-to-be's wishes on the timing of the shower. It is important to note that baby showers for parents who are adopting can be particularly heart warming and encouraging as they wait for the arrival of their little one. One adoptive mother noted that her baby shower increased her hope and excitement after a long wait to receive her baby.

Those giving the shower should start planning at least four to six weeks before the date of the shower. It is much easier to have several people host the shower in order to share expenses and divide the tasks. Someone can take care of the guest list and invitations, another person can determine the theme, tableware and decorations, and yet another person can select the games and entertainment. Usually all the hostesses like to give input on the food and beverages and can share responsibility in preparing or purchasing the food items.
