Since most parents register preferences for gifts at discount stores and baby specialty stores, it is important to stick to their choices. This is especially important with room décor items. If a mom likes the blue sail boat baby sheets and comforters, do not buy her the teddy bear ones! Unless you have a very good feel for the mom or dad's decorating taste, do not buy a picture or some other type of wall hanging. This is annoying for the new parent who feels obligated to put the object on the wall, but really doesn't like the item and feels that it does not fit her or his design scheme. Another thing to consider in "what not to buy" is any type of item that the child will have no use for until he or she is much older, especially items that are difficult to store. If you really want to buy your new grandchild or godchild an electric train set, then at least run it by the parents. Otherwise, the expensive item will have to be carefully stored, and potentially moved to a new house before it will be enjoyed by the child.
