Clothing is probably the most common and easy-to-find gift. Cute outfits can be found at Carter's outlets on sale for as little as $10. Stores like Wal-Mart, Target, JC Penney's or Sears are popular stores for gift-buyers because of the ease of making returns or exchanges if necessary, not to mention that most baby items are very reasonably priced. Department stores carry higher priced items ranging in the $30 to $60 range. Finally, there are very high-end boutiques that sell items like specialty smocked or lace outfits or pricey designer outfits. Celebrity-babies have to be photographed only once in a cute tee-shirt for that item to become all the rage with new parents. In deciding what to buy for a new baby, pajama sets are always a safe bet. Remember that newborns spend an amazing amount of time sleeping! Most moms (or dads) tend to categorize clothes for their small children in three of four ways: pajamas and sleep attire play clothes, outfits for school and special occasions (but not dressy), and finally, dressy clothes for special occasions, church or even a trip to your favorite photographer. Most parents would agree that their child or children needs equal amounts of sleeping attire, play clothes and nicer outfits, but only a few "dressy" clothes. An important thing to consider is the climate of the baby's home. Another good thing to think about is that many people buy newborn baby clothes, which the baby will quickly grow out of in a matter of weeks. Babies grow rapidly in the first six months and slow down a little after that point. So, if you want to give a gift of clothing that might last longer, consider a 6 month, 9 month or 12 month size piece of clothing. One mother who was given a shower had the hostess make a request for clothing anywhere from 6 months to 3 years. Because the family lived in a year-round mild climate, the gift-givers did not have to try to figure out at what age winter clothes would be needed and so forth. This mother received adorable outfits that were worn and enjoyed- nearly 4 years after the shower.
