Any serious consideration of how fuel injectors operate leads to discussion of pulsewidth. Here's an attempt at a simple explanation: the fuel injector opens and closes constantly as the engine is running. When it is opened, fuel is injected into the engine. As previously mentioned, an electronic device opens and closes the fuel injector. How long the fuel injector is opened and consequently, injecting fuel,is called the pulsewidth. The duration of the opened fuel injector, or pulsewidth, is related directed to how much fuel is needed at that given moment. The system is even more complex: each cylinder of the engine (whether four, six or eight) have specific fuel requirements as determined by the various sensors and monitored by the engine control unit. Pulsewidth is calculated using many, many variables. The calculations can show how long a car can run idle on a tank of gas or how long it can run "wide open" on a tank of gas.
