From early childhood imitation of driving a car to that first real experience of putting the "pedal to the metal", most drivers envision that pushing on the gas pedal is somehow forcing gas out of the fuel tank and down the fuel line and into the engine. Inadvertently, this is correct. But a more accurate description of what happens when you press the gas pedal is this: air is forced into the system and the amount of the air is measured to determine the appropriate mass of fuel to deliver at that given moment. But, for some reason, it does not suit to call it an "air pedal".
