When we think of fuel cells, we usually think of vehicles for every day use. The truth of the matter is, though cars consume a tremendous amount of energy, we are a power-demanding world, and the possibilities of using fuels cells as power sources are vast. Little things like alarm clocks or small appliances may one day utilize fuel cell technology. Or even lap top computers or cell phones. The possibility remains open for the use of fuel cells to operate large scale equipment, like air conditioners or heaters. Believe it or not, there is a certain type of fuel cell technology that is already being used in large power generators. Dow Chemical and General Motors opened one such power plant in Texas in 2004. Initially, the plant provided enough power for fifty homes, but plans are to expand to plant in order to supply power to over 25,000 homes.
