A common misconception is that driving in the rain on wet roads is somehow safer than driving in the snow and ice. Wet pavement is just as dangerous if not more so than icy or snowy roads. Rain can be so heavy that it drastically reduces your visibility and it can make the roads slippery and hazardous. One of the most dangerous situations that can occur on wet roadways is when a vehicle hydroplanes or aquaplanes which is when the tires loose contact with the pavement in the wetness. Practicing cautious driving skills along with the awareness of helpful hints can help to keep you and your family safe on wet roads. Below you will find some of those tips for driving on wet pavement:

• Make sure windows are clean of all residues inside and out, especially if you smoke. Also make certain that window wipers work properly.
• Just like every other car ride, make sure every passenger is wearing their seatbelt.
• Always turn the headlights on at the same time you turn your windshield wipers on.
• Reduce your speed when the pavement is wet, even more so if the rain is heavy.
• Ensure that there is plenty of distance between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. Wet roads make for poor braking conditions.
• If the rain becomes so heavy that you are unable to see the road or other vehicles pull over to a place of safety and wait for the rain to subside.
• If your vehicle hydroplanes remember to STAY CALM and DO NOT slam on the brakes, instead slowly take your foot off the accelerator and keep the car straight.
