Probably the best tip for driving on icy roads is to not get out on them. But for many people due to circumstances driving in icy conditions is a must. Many times snow and ice can sneak up on us and before we know it the roads are hazardous to drive on. Being aware of some of the right and wrong ways to handle your car on icy roads is a good idea for any driver; there are several helpful tips to remember when driving on icy conditions such as:

• Just as you would in any other driving situation ensure that everyone in the automobile is wearing their seatbelt.
• Keep your speed low and take turns slowly, even if the roads have been grated.
• Put the defroster and windshield wipers on for better visibility.
• Brake and change lanes slowly.
• Be sure to give more warning than usual when changing lanes, turning, or stopping.
• Don't follow too closely behind other cars, icy patches can come out of nowhere. If your car passes landmarks within 3 seconds as the car ahead of you then you are following too close.
• Pump brakes slowly. Applying constant pressure to the brakes can cause then to lock up making you skid.
• Take corners at a steady speed. If you have a manual transmission have it in as low a speed as possible. Do not use the clutch unless you absolutely have to.
• BEWARE of black ice. It is often in small patches on roadways and is extremely dangerous because it is not visible to drivers.
