The Vienna City Marathon happens each year during the last weekend in May. A twenty-two year old event, this Marathon is not only a race but also a sightseeing tour through lovely Vienna. The 42 km course begins at the UNO Building and moves through Vienna’s cultural districts, finally ending in the center of town at the Haldenplatz (Vienna palace). This Marathon is an internationally attended event and an experience worth bragging about. So, if you’re vacationing in Austria for a week and would like to create a memory unlike any other, considering preparing for and running the Vienna City Marathon.
The Race will look something like this:
• Usually, about 21,000 people are registered for the races (which include the full Marathon, the 10K, a kids’ run, and more).
• Hundreds of thousands of spectators are present, grouped around key points of the race.
• The whole event, one of Austria’s biggest sporting events, is televised.
• The Marathon starts sometime in the morning around 9:00 am.
• Runners work their way through the main downtown area, a large park, an amusement park, and the town.
• Amenities of the course include water and PowerAde, bananas, and carbohydrate-full foods.
