Even though Austria is a very small country, it has produced citizens that have influenced the world in nearly every imaginable way. However, amidst all of its best-known contributors, the individuals Austria is most famous for are probably its musicians. People like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Johann Strauss Sr. and Jr., Franz Schubert, and Anton Bruckner were all born in Austria. However, Austria has also been known for its poets and other writers such as Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig, Thomas Bernhard or Robert Musil, Georg Trakl, Franz Werfel, Franz Grillparzer, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Peter Handke. Famous Austrian artists include Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and Inge Morath.
In addition to producing individuals who excel in the arts, Austria has been the home of many scientists, whether they be physicists, philosophers, biologists, economists, psychologists, or those of another science. Ludwig Boltzmann, Lise Meitner, Erwin Schrödinger, Ernst Mach, Wolfgang Pauli, Richard von Mises, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Karl Popper, Gregor Mendel, Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, Paul Watzlawick, Viktor Frankl, Joseph Schumpeter, Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk, and Siegfried Marcus were all from (either born or lived in) Austria.
