Austria is known for its music, probably largely due to the fact that it has been the birthplace of and home for so many famous musicians. Vienna – the capital – has especially made its name known as a center for musical genius. Renowned composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven were drawn to the city, and Vienna’s rise to its position as a cultural center began in the 1500s. This music, too, has been very diverse. From classical to romantic, tonal and non-tonal, folk music and modern, Austria has seen its share of musical variety. It has also worked with many different instruments in the creation of its masterpieces, including the lute, the harpsichord and piano, the accordion, the double-necked guitar, and more.
Some of the unique types of Austrian music include the following:
• Schrammelmusik – the most fashionable form of folk music in Austria.
• Alpine New Wave – a punk rock genre in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
• Ländler – a very popular Austrian folk dance which many famous composers have written for.
• Yodel – possibly the most well-known form of Austrian singing.
