Austria’s most famous city and capital is Vienna. Vienna’s history begins with the Romans, when it became the capital of the Habsburger’s Holy Roman Empire in 1492. However, the city has changed very much since those days. With 1.7 million people living there and even more Austrians working in the city, it is a “big city” filled with families, political gurus, incredible historical sites, and breathtaking views of the Alps. In Vienna you will find sites like St. Stephan’s Cathedral – one of the oldest buildings in the city; and the Schloss Schönbrunn – a former ruler’s home with parks, a zoo, and more.

However, Vienna is more than just a political and industrial center for Austria. It is also home to much of the cultural influence of the country. Vienna was residence of musicians like Mozart, Hayden, and Beethoven and is still a favorite dwelling place for artists today. In Vienna you will find a myriad of choices regarding theaters, art, and music. Vienna’s tradition of high art is a phenomenon recognized throughout the world.
