Amidst rolling hills and stunning Austrian countryside lies Graz, the capital of the province Styria. This lovely city, which was settled in 800 AD, was once even considered Austria’s second capital and certainly a strategic military and economic center. With about 230,000 people living in Graz, it is the second largest city in the country of Austria and is home to many cultural events. It especially emphasizes contemporary art, theatre, and a variety of performances.
Today, the architectural sites of the city attest to the struggle between the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Counter Reformation. However, the most important architectural building in Graz is the Scloss Eggenburg, a significant tower that the city is known for (and which is also a popular place for residents to experience their first kiss). In addition to these buildings, Graz is known for other structures, like fortresses, opera houses, and more. Some of the sites that are very popular landmarks and tourist stops are:
• Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II. Visit the burial place of this famous emperor.
• Ruine Gosting. Here lie the ruins of the Gosting Castle which, between the 11th and 15th centuries, was traffic control for all Graz. The Ruins now offer a beautiful view of Graz.
• Stadtpark. Located in the center of Graz, this large park offers many pathways, statues, and fountains to enjoy.
• Church of the Franciscans. A great tourist stop – This is the oldest church in the city.
• New Graz Architecture. This self-guided tour instructs the tourist on many different examples of contemporary architecture.
