All of Australia is known for loving their sports and Melbourne is no exception to that rule. The city is holds the undisputed title as the sporting capitol of Australia. Australian football was born in the city and is the most popular sport played there today and is even home to 9 of the 16 teams that make up the Australian Football League (AFL). Other sports that are popular in Melbourne are horse racing, tennis, hockey, baseball, softball, netball, rugby, cricket, swimming, polo, soccer, and formula one racing. Melbourne is home to several large sporting events such as the AFL Grand Final, the Melbourne Cup (horse racing), the Australian Open (tennis), Australian Formula One Grand Prix, the FIFA World Cup (soccer), and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The city will host the FINA World Aquatics Championships in 2007 along with World Cup (soccer) qualifying games in 2008 and 2009.
