Woodburning is a common term to describe the art form of pyrography. Pyrography comes from an ancient Greek term that means "writing with fire." It is the traditional art of using heated tools to burn or scorch decorative designs onto wood. Pyrography is one of the earliest of ancient art forms dating back to native cultures on all continents. It is also known as pokerwork, because in Victorian times a red-hot poker was used as a burning tool.
