The Hohokam Indian Tribe were the first settlers in the area that would later become Phoenix in 300 BC. The tribe farmed the land and also built an irrigation system that consisted of ditches and canals that led water from the Salt River to their crops. Researchers aren’t sure what led to the tribe’s disappearance from the land but say it could be blamed on drought which either forced the tribe to relocate or ended up wiping them out.
