Patagonia not only varies geographically throughout the region, but it contains areas with extremely diverse climates. There are four distinctive seasons in the Patagonian region; however, the spring and fall months are typically shorter which leads to long winter months. You can expect to bundle up most of the time when visiting Patagonia. And you can not forget about the strong winds that are present in this particular region. A characteristic of the climate is the wind which can extend up to 80 miles per hour and greater, generally in the Central and Atlantic areas. While wind, rain, and snow are quite common in Patagonia, you simply never know what type of weather you will encounter and you should be geared up for anything. Evening temperatures can drop considerably, so it is important for those living in this region, as well as visitors that are not familiar, to have a coat or jacket available for outdoor evening activities. The estimated temperature of Patagonia will depend on the particular area in which you are located. The temperatures during the winter months range anywhere from 30 degrees Fahrenheit to 45 degrees Fahrenheit, but keep in mind these are only estimated temperatures. The summer months can range anywhere from 45 degrees Fahrenheit to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Patagonia covers a great deal of area and it is known, by many, as the land of extremes so these temperatures can be extremely diverse. The varying terrain can cause weather differences throughout the entire region and weather changes significantly from season to season. The Chilean Patagonia climate is similar to that of the Pacific Northwest, during the summer months, with its rain forests and high coastal mountains. The climate in the Argentinean portion is much different because of its mountains and dry plains. The summer months in the central part of the region can become hot. Also keep in mind that excessive winds, which are quite common, can cause the temperatures to drop by several degrees. Many feel the best time to visit the Patagonian region is during the summer which are between the months of December and March. These months are a bit warmer, typically have comfortable weather, but are not ideal for those that desire cold weather and winter snow.
