As Buenos Aires is known to be the “Capitol of Tango”, no visit to the area is complete with a trip to La Boca. This is the area where tango reigns high in terms of remembering the great dance that was founded many years ago. Whilst in the area, make sure you take a walk down the famous Caminito walkway; this is where you can observe various tango dancers and local artists showcasing their talents to the world.
La Boca does get many mixed feelings in terms of what is on offer but you will find that when planning a trip, any travel book on Buenos Aires will be highly recommended and overall, with a number of small restaurants and cafes it truly does prove a great day out.
If you get the chance during the day whilst you are still in La Boca then why not pay a visit to the Museo al Aire Libre (Open-Air Museum). This museum has a wide variety of exhibits to see and they are made to a high quality standard by local artists. With a variety of ceramics, sculptures and various other items such as drawings and paintings, you can see that the citizens of Buenos Aires really can create great art. The museum is open from 10am to 6pm daily so even if you can only allow an hour, I would try your hardest to stop by and admire the art on show.
If you are still in the La Boca area then I recommend trying one of the local restaurants which can be found nearby in case you don’t get back to the area during your trip.
• The El Obrero restaurant is another delight for visitors and the qualified chefs offer traditional Argentine far in a historic atmosphere. Meat cooked on the grill is the major highlight of the restaurant and with the dishes being served on large platters; you will need to ensure you have plenty of room. There are plenty of other options to choose from such as different pastas and fish dishes. If you are feeling adventurous then the puchero is recommended – it is a filling stew which proves ideal for cooler evenings but you don’t have to wait until such a day to try it. It is a lively area where the locals and tourists are able to mix and it has been an area that has received the company of several famous individuals. Prices for main courses are excellent value for money and range from just $3 - $5, if you decide to dine here, it is casual dress and meals are served Monday to Saturday from Noon to 4pm and then 8pm until late. Reservations are not necessary and whilst the service is excellent, arrive before 10pm so you don’t have to wait too long because it is a very popular choice.
• If this type of atmosphere is not to your liking then a visit to the Las Violetas restaurant in Almagro also comes highly recommended. The atmosphere is very basic but most certainly colourful and the fully experienced chef on site can create a wide range of tasty dishes. It is suggested by the staff that you try the salad (Alfonsina Storni) or the handmade raviolis (al Gran Caruso) and if you decide not to make this choice, there are many other options available in terms of salads, meats or pastas. Prices tend to be slightly more expensive than other alternative restaurants in the area at around $30 for a main course but you are paying for quality and with the majority of dishes handmade, it is not often a meal will receive such attention to detail. Reservations are highly recommended and if you are waiting for a table then why not admire some of the crystal ornaments displayed in the salon.
