Argentine cinema has attained international acclaim, and has often been employed as the channel to exorcise the horrors of the Dirty War, the atrocities of the last military dictatorship. Some of its most popular films include The Official Story and 9 Queens. The more modern city of Mar del Plata holds its own festival dedicated to the art of cinema. A recent study in August 2005 indicated that nearly one third of Argentines had attended a cinema in the previous three months, especially those younger than 35. In contrast to the cinema, the theater is not nearly as trendy in Argentina. It is regarded as being for those elite members of society. It is estimated that only 10% of Argentines go to plays regularly and that the plays they do attend, center on lighter comedy and musical shows.
