Perhaps the field of literature is the most independent of European influences as this field has been a cross-cultural transaction. Argentina has birthed writers of such international acclaim as Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, Manuel Puig, and Osvaldo Soriano. Borges is regarded as one of the greatest 20th century writers of the world in which he wrote non-fiction essays, poems, and short stories.

Argentina is also the home of a popular cartoon by Joaquin Lavado called Mafalda. Soon after this cartoon was published, it developed into a world-recognized Argentine icon. The cartoon focuses on presenting the world’s troubles through the eyes of a young girl named Mafalda.
