Tips for Sellers

A great way to increase the volume of your sale is to have a sale with a group of friends. You can split the cost of advertising, you'll have a wider variety of merchandise, and you will attract more shoppers. It's also a lot more fun to sit out in your driveway on a hot day if you have friends to keep you company. To keep track of whose stuff is whose, put your initials on the price tags of your items. If it is an especially hot day, it's a good idea to sell cold cans of pop or bottles of water. When opening your garage sale, always start on time and stick to the hours you posted in your ad. Letting the "early birds" shop before the sale begins will be frustrating to customers who arrive on time and find that the item they came for is already sold. Have plastic bags and plenty of change available. A good starting amount is $80-$100: Two $10 bills, four $5 bills, twenty-five $1 bills, and a role or two of quarters. When displaying your items, do so neatly and efficiently. People do not want to dig through piles of junk. If you can, try to hang up some of your clothes. Sort the rest into groups of pants, shirts, tank tops, etc. If you need more space or display room, take advantage of the space under tables. If you are selling any kind of electronic item, make surer that there is an electrical outlet nearby so that people can check to see if stuff works. During the down time of your sale, straighten up the piles and fill in the gaps on your tables so they don't look picked over.
