At some time or another, every one of us has looked around our house and had the same thought, "Where did I get all of this stuff?" At that point you have a couple of options. You can go on pretending you have room for all of your household clutter, you can pack it up and donate it to charity, or you can have a garage sale. If you decide to go with the latter of these three, then you have your work cut out for you. Having a garage sale can be a big undertaking, but the extra room in your house, not to mention the extra cash in your wallet, will make it all worthwhile.

The first thing you need to do is to start sorting through your possessions. During this phase, you may be tempted to hang on to certain valuables, like your platform shoes or your 8-track player, but you must resist. Just keep reminding yourself how good it will feel to have a clutter-free home. Once you've collected the items you plan on selling, the next step is to advertise. When placing an ad in the paper, be sure to include pertinent information, such as the date, time, and address of the sale, as well as any specific items you have for sale, like Little Tykes toys, furniture, or kids clothes. It's also important to have signs placed strategically around your community. Make signs that are bright with big lettering so that they are easy to read from a distance. Once you've tackled the advertising, your definitely committed to the sale, so you had better get to work on that huge pile of stuff you have collected. First, price every item. This will keep you spending the entire day answering questions and haggling. Pricing items in increments of 25 cents will make it easier to add up items and make change. If you have groups of certain items, like books or video tapes, it may be easier to just mark the box, "All Videos $2.00" or something like that. When deciding what to price items at, consider that the general guide for resale is 1/4 or 1/5 of the purchase price. Display your items attractively on tables and open your doors! You're now ready for your sale.
