Garage Sale Safety

If you are having a garage sale, there are several things to keep in mind to protect yourself and your home. First, it's important that you never man the sale alone. Second, always keep an eye on the cash box and the people around it. An even better idea is to keep the money on your person. You can wear a carpenter's house apron or something like it to keep the change sorted. It's also a good idea to bring the excess money into the house periodically. Another important rule of thumb is to never let shoppers into your house. Make it a policy that no one is allowed in to try on clothes, use the restroom, make phone calls, or anything else that is asked of you. Be firm with persistent shoppers. They are used to hearing "no" and will try to wear you down. It's also a good idea to check your homeowner's insurance policy before hosting a garage sale. Should an accident happen on your property, you could be liable. If your sale is a one-time event, your liability insurance probably covers it. However, if you are having garage sales every other week, you need to get a business insurance policy. If you are having a sale with a group of neighbors, or if the proceeds from the sale are going to benefit a charitable organization, you may be required to get a permit, so check with the city.
