Finding the right public relations firm can be of great benefit to your organization. But finding the wrong one, or finding one that has a reputation for making mistakes, can be just as big a detriment. Be sure your public relations firm will work to avoid these major mistakes:
- Not thinking creatively – Some firms fall into patterns and are not able to generate new ideas. Look for evidence of creativity in their work.
- Not catering a public relations plan to your organization’s specific needs – Firms may attempt to fall into the “one size fits all mentality” that this worked for another business, so it will work for you.
- Being sloppy – Attention to detail is critical in public relations.
- Using the shotgun approach – Public relations efforts should be part of a larger plan and should be working toward a long-term goal. Some firms will try to keep you happy with firing off a press release once a month without larger goal in mind. This will accomplish little for you.
- Not being truthful – Ensure that your public relations firm will always tell the truth and will never engage in misinformation campaigns. Take the high road.
- Using too much glitz and too little substance – Good public relations work has substance, which is packaged nicely. People will very quickly see through the package without the substance.
