The field of public relations involves, quite simply, maintaining positive relationships with the public. While many organizations choose to perform most of their public relations using internal employees, many turn to publicity or public relations firms to handle the work. These are firms offering services in all, or many, aspects of public relations, including media relations, community relations, governmental relations, employee relations, and investor or donor relations.
Public relations firms operate on fees, and can be engaged on a one-time basis for a single project or on an ongoing retainer basis so the firm is available to you for a set amount of work each month.
These firms work with a number of clients, including corporations, trade associations, governments, non-profits, advocacy groups, or political campaigns. They also can be used to promote a musician, author or celebrity. Some public relations firms specialize in a particular service offering, while others are general shops that work with a wide range of industries.
