  • Make it short and to the point. Studies show that people in art galleries spend an average of 1 to 30 seconds looking at each painting as they go by. How much less time will a person spend on an advertisement they didn’t pay to see?
  • Tell them what you most want them to know first.
  • Make the important information easy to find. Forget what you learned in creative writing class and leave the long, descriptive sentences behind. These bog your reader down in endless details and they’ll begin to skip around, looking for the pertinent information. You’re not selling the ad, your selling a product or service.
  • Stick with words that are easy to understand. Save difficult techno-speak for later, when the buyer is ready for details.
  • Choose graphics that are appropriate to the product. A sunny beach scene with a sailboat on the water doesn’t make anyone want to buy a new winter coat, so remind the reader that cold weather is coming and they need to be prepared.
  • Tell them why your company is better. Competition exists to prompt us to do and be our best. Let the consumer know why you think you are the best choice.
  • Even if you sell one thing, different people will buy that one thing for many different reasons. Alternate your print strategies to market to those who buy something for fun with those who are buying it because they need it.
