We, of course, think everything about our organization is interesting. So we cannot understand how anyone, let alone reporters and editors, would think otherwise. You must remember that reporters’ primary allegiance is to their readers, or the public. To help put aside your own feelings and get to the bottom of whether or not something is news, ask yourself:
- Is this story timely?
- Is this story likely to affect people outside of my organization?
- Does this story involve high-profile or famous people?
- Is this story about something larger than my business?
- Is this story part of a business or cultural trend?
- Does this story have a human interest or community element?
- Is this story unusual?
- Is there someone outside my business, such as an unbiased professor or professional, who could comment on the value of this story?
