Outdoor advertising can be as simple as leaving one billboard up for years at a time, or as complex as specifically targeting an audience using different locations, styles, and messages. Though many simple outdoor advertising strategies are completely adequate, your company may be looking for a way to make its outdoor ads more effective.

To that end, think carefully about where you should advertise. Just as companies place their television commercials during shows watched by their target audience, place your outdoor ads in places frequented by your target group. If you are trying to sell products to a certain ethnic group, put your outdoor ads in ethnic neighborhoods. If you are trying to target athletic-minded people, put a billboard on the way to the stadium.

In addition, it is valuable to think beyond billboards to employ other types of outdoor advertising. These other kinds of advertising are likely more economical and will add flexibility that will help you to better reach your target audience. For example, a gas station that has weekly specials might put outdoor ads at the station itself, so that it can easily change the ads every week.

Finally, outdoor advertising can tread a fine line between attracting attention and annoying the customer. Billboards that are tasteless or that are too obtrusive will often turn off a potential customer rather than attract them, so advertise with care.
